AS220, 115 Empire Street, Providence, RI
FREE (buy your own food and drink – it’s cheap)
Founded by Brown CS ’09 graduate Andres Douglas, Bakodo is a Providence-based startup that’s all about doing awesome things with barcodes. Their Barcode Scanner for the iPhone provides anywhere-access to the massive Bakodo product database, giving you all manner of cool product info: from your friends opinionated reviews of deodorant, to the lowest price and closest location of that geek gadget you covet.
Launched this past June, Bakodo has already garnered a lot of attention, including being featured in Mashable’s “5 Huge Trends In Social Media Right Now,” and has broken into the Top 20 of the AppStore’s Utilities category. At the November Geek Dinner, Andres will tell the Bakodo story, demo their impressive services, and reveal some of his secrets for making hugely popular mobile apps – a must hear if your strategy contains the word “mobile” or “barcode”!
Be sure to download and check out the (free!) Bakodo app for your iOS device.
Please RSVP at Facebook – and while you’re there please join our Facebook group. And if you want to join our very-low-volume email announcement send an email to Jack Templin, email@example.com with your name and affiliation.
As always, for first-timers here are the details on the Geek Dinners:
- The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at Haven Bros truck.
- It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whoever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great)
- Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about AJAX, mash-ups, start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, etc. etc. etc.
- There is Wi-Fi so bring your connected device of choice.
